Phoenix crash, car fire on Interstate 10 creates traffic mess

A car burst into flames after colliding with a commercial truck on westbound Interstate 10 near Interstate 17 Friday morning, creating havoc for rush-hour traffic.

The car lost control on a curve near 24th Street and rear-ended the truck, according to the Department of Public Safety.

The collision occurred shortly after 7 a.m., closing the westbound lanes as firefighters fought the blaze, DPS said. Traffic was backed up at least a mile. Two lanes were reopened after the blaze was extinguished.

Smoke from the fire could be seen across the Phoenix area.

The driver of the car was taken to the hospital with head and chest injuries.
