A man died after nine cars crashed on Interstate 10 eastbound Thursday morning, forcing the closure of the freeway from Ray Road to Chandler Boulevard, officials said.

Around 2 a.m., the driver of a black Toyota pickup truck was speeding down Interstate 10 east and lost control, according to Department of Public Safety Officials.

He swerved into a semi-truck and was ejected from his car, officials said.
He died at the scene, officials said.

The initial collision caused nine cars to collide, three of which were semi-trucks, officials said.
Two people were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the semi was shaken up from the collision, officials said.

Crews are on the scene to clear the wrecks from the freeway. Eastbound traffic was diverted at Ray Road.
The eastbound lanes should re-open by 8 a.m., officials said.

From all accounts, the first driver mentioned seems to have liability.  But, why did he lose control?  Medical emergency?  Inattention?  Other?  An investigation needs to be completed.

Does anyone else have liability?  As drivers on the public roadway, all drivers are required to drive a safe speed for traffic conditions, maintain a safe following distance, etc…  Does that potentially impute liability to multiple drivers here?  Quite possibly.

Arizona is a comparative negligence state, which means that each driver can be held responsible for the percentage of negligence that causes and accident.  Seems pretty fair.   We will have to wait and see how this one plays out.
