07/09/13 - Drivers are being forced off Interstate 10 at 43rd Avenue after a suspect fleeing from authorities ran into traffic Tuesday afternoon and was struck by a vehicle.
Officer Carrick Cook, of the Arizona Department of Public Safety, confirmed that police were engaged in a foot pursuit of a suspect when he ran into the eastbound lanes of I-10 at 35th Avenue and was struck by a vehicle.
Arizona Department of Transportation officials confirmed I-10 has been shut down at 43rd Avenue. ADOT video from the area showed a significant backup in the eastbound lanes, as crime tape blocked off the freeway near 35th Avenue.
Cook said it is expected that the freeway will be closed for several hours. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area.
