Deadly accident closes portion of Interstate 10 at Picacho Peak on Saturday






08/12/13 - A portion of Interstate 10 near Picacho Peak was temporarily closed Saturday morning due to a deadly rollover accident.


Officer Carrick Cook of the Department of Public Safety said a rear tire separated from a van traveling eastbound along the Interstate 10 around 7:30 a.m. causing the vehicle to rollover into the median and ejecting the driver.

Cook said the driver, an adult female from Silver City New Mexico, died at the scene.

Katy Reeve of Southwest Ambulance/Rural Metro said the van had two adults and 10 children inside at the time of the accident. The ages of the passengers ranged from infant to 24 years old.

DPS said two medical helicopters were called to the scene to transport victims to local hospitals.
Reeves said 1 adult is in critical condition at University Medical Center in Tucson, three children are in critical condition and seven children were transported with non-life-threatening injuries.

Eastbound and westbound lanes were closed for a short period of time, but have since reopened, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
