Pedestrian struck, killed on I-10 in Chandler

04/22/14 - Authorities are looking for the driver of a pickup truck that fled after fatally striking a person ejected from another vehicle on Interstate 10 in Chandler, according to an Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman.   Investigators are treating the case as a homicide.

The wreck closed the interstate for several hours but the road had re-opened by early Tuesday morning.

DPS Officer Carrick Cook said a speeding truck was merging onto eastbound I-10 from Ray Road when it swerved to avoid another vehicle at about 8:20 p.m. Monday.

The violent swerving caused a passenger to be ejected from the truck and thrown onto the freeway, according to Cook.

Cook said another pickup struck and killed the person but kept on driving.

Officials late Monday were interviewing witnesses to try to get a description of the truck that fled the scene.

A tarp appeared to be covering the body in the middle lanes of eastbound I-10 at about 9 p.m.
The Arizona Department of Transportation sent out a tweet on Monday at about 8:40 p.m. that said all eastbound lanes were closed and that traffic was being diverted.

At one point, eastbound traffic was backed up to Elliot Road, about four miles away from the scene of the incident.
